ROMAN ALGERIA TRIP
(9 days / 8 nights)
DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN ALGIERS
Arrival in Algiers , pick up from airport and transfer to your hotel for two nights. Depending on your arrival time, you can take an afternoon tour of the city including sites to: Place des Martyrs (17th century El Djedid Mosque), Place Emir Abdelkader, Grande Poste, and other sites if time allows us.
DAY 2: ALGIERS / TIPAZA / CHERCHELL / ALGIERS
Right after breakfast we’ll be headed to Tipaza to explore the beautiful Roman ruins that are located next to the Mediterranean Sea and then visit the museum. And then we’ll make our way to the historic basilica, which is said to be the largest in North Africa. Enjoy a fresh fish lunch in Tipaza and travel to Cherchell to visit two museums that hosts a number of Roman antiquities. On your way back to Algiers, you will stop at the pyramid-like structure of the Tomb of the christian.
DAY 3: ALGIERS / SETIF / DJEMILA / CONSTANTINE
Early bird departure to Setif in the morning. Once in Setif, you will visit the National Museum of Archaeology which hosts the remarkable and intact mosaic ‘Procession of Bacchus’. Continue to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Djemila. Djemila, meaning ‘Beautiful’ in Arabic, lives up to its name as it is uniquely situated amongst rolling hills. You will have a guided visit of both the museum and historic site. Explore the forum, basilicas, baptisteries, arch of Caracalla, Temple des Septimes, wellpreserved Roman market, and theatre. Overnight in Constantine.
DAY 4: CONSTANTINE / TIDDIS / CONSTANTINE
Explore the hillside Roman site of Tiddis which offers excellent views over the region. You will begin by walking through the arch and to the sanctuary of Mithras, Christian basilica, and Roman houses. Return to Constantine for city tour and visit the museum of Cirta. We’ll be spending a half day to get a deep insight of this capital of the Arab culture in 2015. You will explore the suspension bridges, the Constantine museum, Kasbah, Palace of Ahmed Bey.
DAY 5: CONSTANTINE / TIMGAD / CONSTANTINE
Today you will want to depart early to have sufficient time at all the sites. Begin with a stop at Medracen (Ancient Numidian Tomb), which is 58 meters in diameter and 19 meters tall. Then travel to the UNESCO site of Timgad, begun by Emperor Trajan in AD100, you will discover the library, temples, amphitheater, arch of Trajan, forum, houses, and basilicas. On your return to Lambaesis, you will stop to visit the large structure of the legionary base. Return to Constantine.
DAY 6: CONSTANTINE / GUELMA / ANNABA
In the morning, then travel on to Guelma where you will visit the well-preserved Roman theatre. You may want to visit the hot springs before continuing on to Annaba.
DAY 7: ANNABA/ALGIERS
After breakfast, you will spend the morning visiting the site of Hippo, the museum, and the Cathedral of St. Augustine. You will take lunch in Annaba at a restaurant along the coast. In the afternoon, time permitting, you may want to visit Cap De Garde, historic mosques. Take an evening flight back to Algiers and transfer to your hotel.
DAY 8: ALGIERS
On the 8th day you will visit the Museum of Antiquities and Islamic Art. In the afternoon, you will take a city tour of Algiers and the historic Kasbah , the spirit of Algiers .
DAY 9: DEPARTURE – ALGIERS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
We’ll drop you in Algiers International airport, which ends your Best of Roman Algeria tour.
